What to Expect
Puncturevine grows low-to-the-ground, in dense mats about 2 to 5 feet in diameter. The stems radiate out from a central taproot. The leaves and stems have tiny hairs. The yellow flowers are about 1⁄4 inch wide with five petals. The seedpod is a cluster of five flat spiny burrs containing up to five seeds. Puncturevine can be removed by pulling up on the central taproot with a provided pulling tool. Plants must be put in heavy duty trash bags to prevent future seeding and to allow for weighing. Care should be taken when bagging to not drop the thorny seedpods or pile weeds on the trail. If seeds fall, participants should sweep up and bag the seedpods.
