It starts with water. Over the next 100 years, the Seven Canyons Trust will work with neighborhood residents and property owners, community groups, developers, and government leaders to mobilize and build an equitable, innovative, and resilient system of greenway corridors along City, Red Butte, Emigration, Parleys, Mill, Big Cottonwood, and Little Cottonwood Creeks. Salt Lake Valley’s residents – both people and wildlife – are enriched through creeks, which are often hidden from us. Beautiful waterways provide access to nature and grow our local economies for everyone, allowing us all to prosper.

In 2023, we made significant progress on our 100-year vision. From completing the City Creek at Folsom Trail Daylighting Design Plan to regional recognition on our Seven Greenways Vision Plan and beyond, we are making the vision to uncover and restore the Salt Lake Valley’s creeks become reality. And, we can’t do it without your help. By year-end, we are raising $30,000 to improve the health of our waterways. Can you get us there: sevencanyonstrust.org/donate?

The City Creek at Folsom Trail Daylighting Design Plan is a community-based vision for a restored City Creek and additional improvements along the Folsom Trail between approximately 700 West and 1000 West in Salt Lake City, developed in partnership with the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Agency. We’ve engaged neighborhood residents, municipal staff, elected officials, and technical stakeholders in a survey, visual preference, and design feedback to develop the vision. Creative engagement techniques, including celebrations, walking tours, online tools, intercept surveying, and more, have involved more than 1,500 community members in the process.

To build momentum, we hired a team of three local Mexican-American artists, the Roots Art Kollective, to complete the nearly 300-foot Folsom Trail Mural Project. From the artists:

We  used  hands  holding/picking up water as a symbol of respect and appreciation for its ability to create life… The design includes intricate patterns of blues (flow) and circles (clouds) to express the impact of water and its never-ending movement. The blue and orange flower of life emphasizes our interconnectedness and symbiotic relationship with water.

The mural creates immediate activation and beautification as work continues on the larger vision. Ultimately, this project will revitalize a rail corridor into a thriving ecosystem and community connection on Salt Lake City’s west side. The Seven Greenways Vision Plan received three professional awards from the Utah American Planning Association, Utah American Society of Landscape Architects, and Colorado/Wyoming American Society of Landscape Architects. The awards recognize the regional importance of this comprehensive 100-year vision to revitalize our waterways and connect people through greenways in the Salt Lake Valley. All the mayors from Salt Lake County and the eight stream-side municipalities have signed their support on the foreword of the plan. You can find more information at sevengreenwaysvisionplan.org.
