Red Butte, Emigration, and Parleys creeks have been freed from their concrete tombs for the first time in a century! The culvert has been peeled back 200 feet up to 900 West. Crews are currently working to create a low-flow channel that will convey the creeks through much of the year.

The outer retaining walls and bioengineered banks are designed to flood out during high flows. The delta shape slows down water, spreads it out, and allows it to soak into the ground. The channel is estimated to hold up to 500-year flood flows.

Bank stabilization along the Jordan River is completed. A new eddy allows in-river recreaters an opportunity to rest, relax, and enjoy the creeks.

The two bridges are installed. The east-west bridge provides connection from the site to the Jordan River Trail. The north-south bridge provides an opportunity for anglers to toss a line into the new channel. It will feature laser-cut designs created by local community members.

I loved this project when I caught the vision for it as a Council Member, and I love it now that it’s nearing completion. I’m so excited for the public to meet this Westside community treasure this year.

Crews will construct the plaza space next. The irrigation system will be installed once the ground has thawed. Plantings of native trees, shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers will be completed in Spring 2021. Keep your eyes peeled for a grand opening and celebrations of this exciting, restorative addition to the west-side.

Please avoid the site work zone for your safety. We appreciate your patience with the construction process. We hope you are excited as us to see this project completed and celebrated by the Glendale neighborhood!
