City Creek Park

Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Length: 400 feet
Cost: $2.3M
Year: 1995

In 1995, City Creek was carved into a former surface parking lot. City Creek Park provides a natural oasis and amenity in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City.

Record-high snowpacks caused City Creek to flood State Street in 1983. Salt Lake City realized burying the creek was an inadequate long-term solution. In 1995, the transformation of a surface parking lot into what is now City Creek Park began.

A public-private partnership between Salt Lake City and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, exchange the ownership of the lot for rights to underground parking. A donation from the church helped uncover the creek through the property.

Benches, green space, and a stone-lined creek create an oasis in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. Hundreds of visitors can be seen enjoying the solace of the flowing water. This project is the first step in uncovering and restoring our urban creeks.
